This is a know X-server bug, nothing that can be fixed in KMail. 
Disabling font anti aliasing should help.

If I add a number of addresses, say 10 to each of the "To: " and "CC: " fields and \
then try to edit one of the fields, or even just click on a field and then use an \
arrow key to move the cursor, kmail freezes and I have to kill it and restart.
