Actually, mutt and kmail are on two different machines.  I use mutt when 
ssh'ed to the mail server at home, and kmail when I'm at work, pop'ing the 
mail off.  So they don't have access to the same files.  I (religiously) 
never use any other mail clients on the same machine as Kmail.  This is 
getting weirder....
