There is no way i have seen to manually refresh the list of imap folders on a server short of closing and reopening the imap connection.  There should be a context menu (right click) for each imap account that has a "refresh folders" option or something similar.
Also - there should be a way to cash the contects of an imap folder locally so that it doesn't take as long to open each message.
Moreover - i noticed that the check mail button doesn't seem to apply to imap folders and also saw that there was a completed bug report for this :-)
