Package: kmail
Version: 1.2 (using KDE 2.1.0 )
Severity: wishlist
Installed from: compiled sources
Compiler: gcc version 2.95.2 19991024 (release)
OS: Linux 2.2.16 i686
OS/Compiler notes:

I am using PGP (or rather GPG) quite extensively lately and as with some other mail \
programs I've tried, kmail lacks an (imho) important feature.

When I encrypt and sent a mail, kmail will
store the mail encrypted and I can decrypt
it if I've selected the appropriate option
("encrypt with own key").

As I like to store my mail and not delete it
every now and then, I am afraid that I might
be unable to read these mails in a couple of
years (i.e. PGP might change, file formats
may change and I will definitely change my
key!!!). In fact, I am quite sure about this.
This is equivalent to a loss of the mail
itself (an non-decryptable mail is as much
worth as a deleted mail) which I really dislike.

What I would like to ask for is an option
that will make kmail store the mail
UNencrypted in the Sent-folder (signatures
can be left for integrity and maybe it could
add a line to the head like "was sent
encrypted to xyz").

Of course this has to be an option (probably
very easy to implement) as security requires
that some people do only store their mails
encrypted. But I (and a lot of other people)
only want to secure my mail on it's way to
its recipient.

In fact, my arguments are also valid for
encrypted mails I _receive_. An option to
decrypt them and store them in unencrypted
form would be great as well, otherwise I won't
be able to read them in a couple of years
(or even months when in bad luck). A lot of
my friends use keys that expire every twelve
months ...

I hope that someone will consider this
humble request. Former mail applications
authors rejected this request as they
(quite stubbornly, imho) insisted that it
would be insecure. But I believe in the
freedom to chose and I am sure that many
people are going to like this feature.

Thanks for listening.
