I am not yet certain if the problem is "solved" but I changed the kmail check 
mail interval from every 1 minute to once every 4 minutes.  So far with this 
setting changed, the tendency for kmail to just stop working hasn't arisen.  
I'll run it all day tomorrow to see if it remains functional.

This being the case, I am not certain if there is something different/changed 
at my pop mail server that would have a problem with a mail check every 60 
seconds or if there is something buggy in kmail in this regard.

The terminal messages when kmail was run from konsole would be normal and OK 
up to a message that the mail server terminated the connection immediately 
upon some mail check attempt - after that, no more kmail mail checking would 
occur regardless of what I did except restarting it.
