Could it be, that your hard disc is full then?
Anyway, performance for handling huge folders is already heavily improved in 
the development version.

My inbox has large number of e-mails (~4000, unread 2418). First I tried to do author \
search and program crashed. Then, I selected around 1500 mails and tried to delete \
them, but program crashed again. I tried again to delete smaller number of mails \
(~500) but this time the whole system was stopped. (Keyboard nor mouse didn't react \
for a long time (~15 minutes (hehe, the last sentence sounds like one of famous MS \
Win stupid messages :+))))). Finally, I reset the machine. Latter I have tried to \
delete mails one by one, and that works!
