Hi Marc,
Sorry to reply so late, but I've been gone a few day's.
What I want is to have complete control over all the keybindings in kde. In
emacs and bash I use ctrl-a to go to the beginning of the line. In most KDE
applications ctrl-a is bound to "select all". You can (in most apps) change
the keybindings, but without effect if you change ctrl-a. One of the
developers informed me this was because the qedit (?) from the qtlib has
"build in" keybindings, and ctrl-a is one of them. I'm not sure why exactly I
couldn't solve this myself (edit the qt sources and build -> no more problem
right?) but I think a more global solution would be better, as more people
complain about this here at work. (where a lot of people use the kde desktop)
If you need a testcase, use Kmail, the app with wich I encounter this problem
almost every day. You can edit the keybindings, but changing ctrl-a has no
effect.
Maybe there should be a central control of the default keybindings in kde
(based on the qt bindings?) so all qedit's could be changed at once to the
users like. But then again, I am not that familiar with the kde sources to
"see" the right solution for this.

It's ok to be bound, as long as the user is able to "unbound" every
keybinding, including this ctrl-a
