I'm just wondering what use cases are created to demonstrate the use of
something. =:-(

What's a thread? A collection of messages in parent-child relation.
Basically you can recognize a thread via the [+] in front of the top level
parent message.
Clicking on the [+] opens the thread, click on [-] closes it.

Nobody would come out with the idea to put this [+] or [-] plus the lines
into a separate column. And we actually know, that this column is only
invented to avoid some clicks. ;-)

We don't really need a thread icon, and we never need it to be able to
select threads. A keybinding is the first approach. And for those who count
the mouse clicks I would suggest to think about the possibility to
right-click on [+] or [-] to select/deselect a thread. (As soon as you have
to scroll, then your number of clicks theorie is broken anyway.)
