Subject: kmail using wrong identity when talking to smtp server
From: rannirl@usermail.com

Package: kmail
Version: 1.2 (using KDE 2.1.1 )
Severity: normal
Installed from: Linux-Mandrake 8.0 i586
Compiler: gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Linux-Mandrake 8.0 2.96-0.48mdk)
OS: Linux 2.4.2-11mdksmp i686
OS/Compiler notes:

I have multiple identities set up for my various email accounts (a feature I really \
like about kmail).

However after upgrading recently from KDE 2.0.1 (from kde.org) to KDE 2.1.1 (as part \
of a mandrake 8 install), various pieces of mail either bounced or vanished in \
transit.

The problem appears to be that though the email content is correct, when talking to \
the smtp server it provides the email address of the default identity instead of the \
one it is supposed to be using. Which results in the return path being set to the \
wrong account. Under certain conditions this results in the smtp server for either \
the sender or the recipient rejecting the mail as malformed (and thus likely spam).

The smpt server trace looks like this:

new msg 11985
info msg 11985: bytes 652 from <default.identity.address> qp starting delivery 14915: \
                msg 11985 to local recipient@host.domain
status: local 1/10 remote 0/20

(The particular way I discovered this is that my 'default' identity is set to "-" as \
the email address to ensure that I select the correct profile and don't send work \
email from my home account or vice versa. Putting a valid email address solves the \
boucing/disappearing problem for the most part, but the incorrect return path is \
still supplied).

I can supply message headers and smtp logs if needbe.
