well, i just read a couple more bug reports re: smtp auth... if the current 
ident system is seen as ok for now and the smtp auth (thereby kio_smtp) is 
seen as a hotter issue, i would be perfectly fine with taking Neil's patch 
and finishing/maintaining it... this would put off my finishing the kcmemail 
improvements i'm working on (since i've only got ~4 hours a week of coding 
time to put to kde right now on a decent week) but if, as it seems to be, 
kio_smtp is of greater importance, i'd be happy to take on finishing Neil's 
work if Neil can't get to it (i think he's busy w/multimedia stuff right 
now?) and it would be used within KMail sooner rather than later.

thoughts? Neil? Don?
