I am a recent convert to Linux and use Pegasus Mail as my Windows email client. This program has a feature allowing the selective downloading of email from a Pop3 mailbox. Selecting this feature downloads the mail headers together with file size etc. Mail can then be marked for download, deletion, both or neither. I found this very useful in dealing with Spam. It is also useful to allow downloading of important email immediately whilst deferring the download of large files to a more convenient time. I have not yet found a Linux mail client with a similar feature, though I will continue to search. In the meantime, I suggest that this may be a useful feature to add to KMail. I'd be interested if others share my opinion.
