Well, I was sorta looking for 2. However if you look at kwrite, it has an icon
(the pen and paper pic) which is both in the window decoration and the
decoration of the taskbar. When you edit a file (but don't save it) the icon
in the task bar will change - there is a little floppy disc icon added to it.
The window decoration stays the same, though.

So this is only in the task bar, not in the docking area. (Where kbiff would
place it.)

Using kbiff works, too, but requires to setup another tool, for almost no
added functionality (assuming the other functions of kbiff are not needed),
plus I really like the way kmail fetches the mail first and then creates a
audible signal. (Great for large mails.) So I'd rather let kmail handle the
job. The only problem with this is that when I miss the bell (because I'm out
of the office for a minute) I don't have an indication that there is new
mail. So I thought this might perhaps be a nice feature to have.

Cheers

Stefan
