Does signing a text file work on the command line? Please try the
following:
gpg --escape-from --armor --always-trust --status-fd 2 --clearsign testmail
where "testmail" is a text file.

Does signing without encryption work in KMail?

Are you sure that you have given the right used id in
options->security->PGP-User id? Maybe there is a typo?
