This happens, when the hostname changes between KDE startup and an action in kmail/konqi (like requesting an url). With a dialup internet connection, it is sometimes necessary to configure the hostname (kppp has such an option) from the dialup-provider. My mailprovider does not accept mails on his smtp-server, if he cannot identify my hostname - so I must allow kppp to reconfigure it. But then kmail and konqi are unusable. In fact, once the hostname has changed, there is no chance to start any programs from the panel (starting them from the commandline still works).
