AFAIK { } do not have special meaning in email messages.
Braces are the same character class as letters and numbers...

That's a (simple) rewrite rule of your mail server. However, mail servers
do not need to rewrite addresses this way, as "cwhii(test)@mail.com"
is a vaild address according to RFC822.

You could even have mail servers that do other, maybe strange,
things. It's all up to the mail server's ruleset.
