Huge attachments are indeed currently not handled very memory effective in 
KMail. However if that would be improved the limit for this kind of problem 
would only be increased to a higher level and the general problem would be 
still there. Getting totally rid of this problem would mean to rewrite some 
amount of code to parse the mail on the hard disc. I don't think that that 
will be done in the near future.

However I don't believe that KMail really hangs the system with that. If it 
would do, I would consider that a system bug. If your swap partition is much 
bigger than your physical memory it only might take several minutes until the 
system is ready with paging and reacts again. If KMail really runs out of 
memory it exits greatfully with a segfault.
