 unknown Severity: normal

I've selected "external editor" in the Settings->Configuration->Miscellaneous
panel of the Kmail client. The editor I'm running is sam, a port to X of the
plan9 editor.

As far as editing is concerned, this works great! I'm very satisfied with
the kmail ui and functionality.

However I see the following odd behavior: the kmail client is wedged
as long as sam is active: the parent kmail client and composer windows
seem to freeze. If other composer windows are open, they freeze too.
If I select-and-move another window (not only sam, but also eg konqueror)
over the kmail windows, there is either no repainting or else partial
repainting of the kmail windows. When there is partial repainting, the
repainting is with bits and pieces of the kmail window and bits and
pieces of decoration windows and nearby windows and the root window.
It looks very, well, beta-ish.

Once I exit from sam, the kmail windows come live again and repaint
as one would expect.

This behavior doesn't seem to break anything, it simply looks bad,
and limits the usefulness of kmail because I can't poke around in
other e-mails while I have the sam window open.

I don't see this sort of interaction between konqueror and sam, so
it would seem to be specific to kmail. I've used sam on linux for
years, and had no trouble of this sort with any other application.

If I launch sam in some other way, eg from the kde menu or from
a terminal window, moving it across kmail client/composer windows
has no effect on those windows, they repaint not instantaneously
but as fast as konqueror repaints, ie in a fraction of a second.

The launch string for sam in Settings->Configuration->Miscellaneous
launches sam in the foreground. If I launch sam in the background,
then I seem to have more severe problems, although I haven't checked
this thoroughly.

I'm using the mandrake 7.2 distribution with kde2.1 beta.
