I had the same problem for some time, but it disappeared (also SuSE 7.0). 
That could be because I made a change to the protocol recently, but I'm not 
sure.
Usually on the third mail checking attempt it worked for me. Is that also the 
case for you?
I guess it's a bug in the server, at least it works on nearly all other 
versions of the same server.

What we do different than Netscape is, that we check if the server supports 
APOP and use it for login if possible.
