I am 100% sure that this is not kmail's fault.

Maybe kmail triggers the problem, but a vital (unix) system should not
crash from an application.

I know, there are exceptions from this, etc., but I cannot imagine
anything besides running out of RAM that could cause this from kmail's
side.

Are you sure you do not have an overclocked system, or bad ram,
XFree-4.0, etc. ?
