the point, i think, was this:

let's say you've done a mail run and have gotten 50 messages. you 
wish to respond to the sixth one, and the response includes quoting 
from a message in a folder. you open that folder, quote the message 
in your reply, send your reply, and return to your inbox. the new 
(blue) messages have all turned red. do another mail run and the new 
new messages are blue, the old new messages -- the ones that turned 
red when you went to the folder -- are still red, and the read 
messages are black. so the question becomes what is it about having 
looked in a folder that justifies changing the color of unread 
messages in the inbox?
