yup. as you'll note, though, the fix worked. i'm writing this from 
within a working kmail 1.1.41. yippee! netscape was killing me. so it 
*was* the pgp stuff.

an interesting observation: while it's possible to have the message 
list sorted by status, it seems that messages are *read* by thread. 
no big deal and no particular inconvenience -- in fact, it's 
interesting and i suspect helpful -- but it's a little disorienting 
at first.

now i've got to figure out why i'm the only person in the world who 
encountered this little kmail problem.
