Could this be a possible addition? I just turned this feature on in 
knode (usenet clinet) and it really makes some threads easier 
to read. This would be true for maillists as well.

In knode one can assign a color for up to three levels of quoting.
Of course it assumes that the quoting starts with a specific
character seqeunce as shown in the attached image (2.5k - hope that's ok)
