Same problem here. Only with 1und1 AND kmail!
Kmail only shows the first message in each directory, if you try to open it, kmail \
starts to use the whole system ram and swap till it freezes.

DIMAP works great with 1und1.

I have the problem on openSuSE (see versions above) AND gentoo (2.6.12-gentoo-r10, \
Qt: 3.3.4, KDE: 3.4.3, KMail: 1.8.3). _______________________________________________
