OK, I've found a workaround.

I upgraded from MDK 9.2 to MDK 10, and KMail was crashing when trying to view files.

This fixed it: I uninstalled the RPM, then did a locate to find everything that contained the word "kmail", and just deleted the whole lot of them.

Then reinstalled KMail. And it worked! :)

Still dunno why that was - I see there are quite a few references to this problem when I google for it ...
