I get a similar problem.  If I lose my connection IMAP no longer works, and the two ways I've found to get it working again is to either shut down and restart kde, or kill -9 the stalled kio_imap4.  Either one will allow kmail to function normally again.  The kill -9 option allows me to keep kmail (and kde) running.
