Just tried with a .xls opening in openoffice: Didn't work. This is after a 
reboot and kontact start. I'm using Debian; Debian cleans out /tmp 
completely.

openoffice complained about a file not being present 
in /tmp/kde-Amit/kontact<blah>...That file isn't there in my /tmp.

On opening that file again, it opened fine in openoffice.
