The status bar reads "no new messages" and the progress bar never moves.  It 
displays very quickly, however, much like when there actually is no mail.  I 
should note that it DOES delete the message on the server, it just does not 
download it to the client.  I can log into the mail server, in this case just 
another Debian qmail box running spamassassin, and verify there are new 
messages in the maildir, but KMail reports none on checking and then deletes 
them.
