in reply to #2 it's nice that it doesn't interrupt the user by grabbing focus but it interrupts me quite badly by covering the back and forward buttons of my browser for example or the File and Edit menus of most other apps.

Anything which cannot be dismissed, hidden or otherwise avoided is guaranteed to interrupt users.
