Hm, that's what it should be doing, in msgAdded:

if ((childCount() == 1) && hi) {
     setSelected( hi, true );
     setCurrentItem( firstChild() );
     setSelectionAnchor( currentItem() );
     highlightMessage( currentItem() );
}

Odd, I'll look into it.
