Summary: kmail 1.5.3 fails to send via SMTP server
           Product: kmail
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: RedHat RPMs
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: general
        AssignedTo: kmail@kde.org
        ReportedBy: gmorris@losalamos.com

Version: (using KDE KDE 3.1.3)
Installed from: RedHat RPMs
OS: Linux

On attempting to send via SMTP (either "now" or "queued" and with or without SMTP-after-POP) \
kmail fails and gives the following error message: Sending failed:
Invalid SMTP response received: " # "
The message will stay in the 'outbox' folder until...

Mozilla 1.4 successfully sends via SMTP through this server (without authentication). Now, my \
ISP recently changed the server, and up to now kmail worked fine, so it seems clear that kmail \
and the new server aren't cooperating. However I have no means to tell if this newly introduced \
incompatibility originates with kmail or with the server. AFAIK, the server is running "IceWarp \
WebSrv/3.1 on Windows 2000". Xnmap or telnet shows that port 25 is open. Kmail successfully \
retrieves mail via POP. Strangely, if I choose "Check what the server supports" in Receiving \
setting, it seems to connect to the server correctly. Doing the same for Sending settings, it \
fails with the message: Could not connect to server mail.<my isp>.com

Even if the fault turns out to be a non-standards-compliant server, it appears possible to make \
kmail more fault tolerant, given that other mail clients still work fine. What can I (and my \
local ISP) do to diagnose the problem so I might provide more debugging information? \
