I finally got it resolved. I did get proper IMAP and POP3 account information
from the host and 
it allowed me to get the local Kmail account setup correctly. Then I deleted the
IMAP folder and 
account. Seems that it crashed only when the host info was wrong.  Sorry
Carsten, I don't have 
the backtrace you are asking for. I used rpm's to install with.
