I also notice this problem.
It seems to happen almost all the time when I login from my laptop
to my desktop via ssh, run kmail on the desktop and have it displayed
on my laptop. In this situation, I often have to kill the kmail that
was running on my desktop (and displaying there), before starting
the new one, so it's possible that kmail is confused because of the
"crash".
If so, I think that kmail should mark the file containing the cached
values as "dirty". During a normal shutdown, kmail would mark the
file "clean". On startup, if the file is marked dirty, it should ignore all
the cached values.
