what about adding these scripts to the KDE distribution and create a
ksshtunnel wizzard which makes it easy for the normal user to set the
necessary parameters ?

As security is a big concern that would help a lot.
BTW I set up my KDE session to use ssh-agent, because I need to access my
office servers and this eases everything a lot
