I've got similar buggy behaviour - if you leave the SMTP host field empty, and 
try to send email by that SMTP - KMail responds - in status bar - that there 
was a problem sending mail, and if you try to force sending mail by choosing 
menu commend File->Send mail from queue it will simply crash. Shoud it be 
classified as another bug, or maybe it's the same as above? 
 
I'm using KMail 1.4.3 (3.0.3-8.3 RedHat) from RedHat 8.0 Psyche RPMs 
I can send you an error report for this, if you wish.
