To stop spreading of incorrect information: the behaviour of the unread column 
is not coupled to the total column. So you don't have to deactivate the total 
column to get back the old behaviour (e.g. I use it this way).

Not bad but I'm not so sure if that'll look good in the context menu of the 
column-header. I'll give it a try. But then it's probably better to include a 
submenu in the View-menu and to put the switches in there.
