I have a very similar problem.  "The Server responded: "5.1.8 <jacob@localhost.localdomain>...  
Domain of sender address jacob@localhost.localdomain does not exist".  My username on this  
machine is jacob, and the hostname is *not* localhost.localdomain. I do not know where it's getting  
that.  Adding "andrew.cmu.edu" as the default domain in the configuration has no affect.  Mozilla mail  
works perfectly.
