I have recently upgraded to the latest Debian/unstable verson of KDE and found this 
bug happens exactly as described, except that I can get it to do another mail check by 
restarting kmail. 
 
$ kmail -v 
Qt: 3.1.1 
KDE: 3.1.0 
KMail: 1.5 
 
Any ideas what might cause this behaviour?
