I think that the negatives outweight the positives.

Your solution would be a bug or feature degradation
from my point of view as KMail would not have full threading anymore.

a) You cannot relyable detect if 'abuse' of the reply button has happened.
    You can only guess.

b) Manual changes of the subject as good practice should be encouraged, 
    your change will help to discourages them.

c) It adds more unnecessary complexity to the threading situation.
