I have this same problem. 
 
KMail 1.5 (Using KDE 3.0.99 (KDE 3.1 RC3)) 
 
I also notice this behavior:  The first message in this state appears empty, and then 
as I click other messages (that are probably bogus), they change their displayed 
information from having real subjects, to/from, etc. to being blank as well.  This stops 
when I get to a non-bogus message.
