I just got into a similar situation, thought of sending a bug report and found
this bug.

I accidently did something bad and wrong with automount and unmounted my home
which is on NFS, and Kmail terminated with a message that it couldn't write into
mail directory. Later after I fixed everything I launched Kmail again and it
hung eating 100% of CPU.

Using strace kmail --nofork I found endless lines of

read(30, "", 32768) = 0

with FD 30 being a file ~/Mail/Spam/cur/1037773590.12728.n09b of zero length.
After I deleted it, everything works just fine.

So I thought it is better to be sure that files of zero length, being invalid
according to any rfc, still don't cause that much problems.

Using Kmail 1.4.3 in Mandrake 9.0 (compiled with gcc 3.2, kernel version 2.4.19).

Thank you
