I had originally used OpenLDAP for an address book, but this time I compiled without LDAP support, with that still checked in the Control Center kmail will crash when you type a letter into the "To" field. Try adding an LDAP address book, set it as default maybe needed to reproduce this. It may happen if it is just "checked". I think this is due to no LDAP resource being available. You may want to add a check for that.
