Summary: kmail spams desktop on broken IMAP connection
Product: kmail
Version: 1.4.3
Platform: unspecified
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: general
AssignedTo: kmail@kde.org
ReportedBy: patrick@dreker.de
Version: 1.4.3 (using KDE 3.0.4)
Installed from: (testing/unstable)
Compiler: gcc version 2.95.4 20011002 (Debian prerelease)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.19
This may be related to bug 42168 but the behaviour differs from this bug report.
I have an IMAP SSL Mail Account at out local university. Kmail checks this \
Mailaccount every 10 Minutes. When the connection ist lost (I have a more or less \
permanent Internet connection, but the server at the other end sometimes goes down \
for different reasons) kmail pops up a Window, that the connection ist lost. Clicking \
the OK Button and collapsing the Folder List usually clears the error condition and \
stops the problem (This is like bug 42168).
But sometimes KMail starts to flood me with these Pop Up Dialogs. Several Dialogs per \
second appear (2 or 3 per second). If I'm lucky this stops after 20 something boxes \
have popped up, and I can click them away. But in some cases (I would estimate 2 or 3 \
out of 10) Kmail does not stop throwing Error Dialogs at me. the last time this \
happened the last Number in the Titlebar I was able to see was 151 (!). After that \
the Desktop becomes unusable, because kwin (? I think) consumes all CPU and nothing \
reacts to the mouse clicks any more. Yet KMail seems to keep throwing the Dialogs, as \
I can that the Desktop keeps trying to draw more and more windows very slowly. Even \
killing KMail from the console does not clear the error condition, and kwin dies \
after approx. 20 or 30 seconds. the only way I found out of these situation is to \
kill the X Server with CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE.
I think Kmail really needs to handle IMAP errors more gracefully...
Patrick
