Until this bug is solved, here is a comment to bug 48038 from Ingo that might 
help, just in case.

If you are using the mbox mail folder format then the message is probably  
still there. To revive it quit KMail, delete the files ~/Mail/.drafts.index*  
and restart KMail.  
 
If you are using the maildir mail folder format then the message is  
unfortunately irrevocably lost.
