I have access. Turns out it was created in August when I wrote to David
Faure, but I never got a confirmation so I never thought to check :-( Thanks
to David and Waldo for helping me out there.

Mode' patch -- I believe it's exactly what you are looking for. I wrote it
about 6 months ago but quit maintaining it due to lack of demand. The
version in CVS is the 'basic' patch, but I can resurrect 'dual mode' if there
is enough interest.
