You didn't close KAddressbook after removing the person from the=20 addressbook. For some reason only after closing KAddressbook KMail gets=20 the changed address list (at least in KDE 3.0.x). 2.) The address is a recently used address and you didn't disable "Show=20 recent addresses" in KMail's Adressbook dialog.
