Well according to http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1939.txt it _must_ send it.

For everything that is right of the "+OK" there is no standard. My server for
example just responds "+OK scan listing follows".
I therefore still have no idea, how this server can work together with any
other POP3 client.
Do they maybe just time out after some time?
The only other way to check for mail I currently see is the stat command, but
using that only produces overhead on all other correctely working servers. At
least in the case not all messages are fetched from the server but only the
new ones we definitely need the output of the list command to display the
progress.
In any case this bug should be fixed in the server and not worked around in
the client.
