No, it doesn't fail. You can click anywhere in the Subject column to
select a message. You don't have to click on the subject text.

I'm not bewitched about this feature (which is no Windows specific
feature because AFAIK most desktop environments, including KDE, support
rubber-band selection). But I see that there seems to be enough demand
for this feature to justify thinking about a way to implement it.
