I've now figured that it occurs only when the kmail is displayed on a box with 
a 10 Mb/s Ethernet connection to the 10-100 switch (and the application is 
running on a box with a 100 Mb/s link). When kmail is displayed on a box with 
a 100 Mb/s connection, everything works just fine.

I still have not updated from the 20020218 CVS. But I will today.
