The second background colour is configurable just like any other colour. In 
the colour scheme configuration, change the value for "Alternate background 
in lists" (last entry).

I recently started using new KDE (cvs version). I am using custom colorset: white background, dark-blue windows and white text. (This is the modification od the dark blue color scheme - i changed only background from dark blue to white).

The problem is, that messagelist is incorrectly displayed. One entry has blue background and white text, next has white background and white text. Pretty u(nu)sable. 

This white background is not configured in Kmail. But it should. Or... some automagic could be added: this additional color should depend on the color selected for the background (eg.: dark banckground -> brighter color, bright background -> darker color).
