This problem is known. It also has been reported several times.

This is indeed large, but it depends on what you did with KMail. E.g. it
will grow to approx. that size when checking in mails from a 10M
/var/spool/mail/user.

If you don't work with large attachements or fetching many mails, then
please provide a way to reproduce the problem and send detailed
information to 38749@bugs.kde.org after reopeining the bug with

in the body of a message to control@bugs.kde.org.

Package: kmail
Version: 1.3.2 (using KDE 2.2.2 )
Severity: wishlist
Installed from: Mandrake RPMs
Compiler: gcc version 2.96
OS: Linux
OS/Compiler notes: Mandrake 8.1

KMail in KDE 2.2.2 has my favourite user interface of Linux mailers, but currently \
I've switched to using Mahogany.

Why:

KMail seems to hog memory and can be very sluggish. For my mailboxes:

SIZE RSS %MEM COMMAND
82788 40M 16.4 kmail

For some reason disposing for instance the compose window takes always over 5 \
seconds. Similarly exiting from kmail takes often 5-10 seconds. Almost as if there \
was a timer waiting for 5 secs before each action.

In comparison Mahogany:
SIZE RSS %MEM COMMAND
8584 8584 3.3 M

Closing down Mahogany windows is instantaneous. It has its share of display problems \
and other 'features' that annoy me, but due to the responsiveness I still prefer \
using it to KMails nicer more coherent interface.

Shouldn't be my machine: Dual Pentium III, 866MHz, 256Mb RAM, SMP 2.4.x kernel.

Any speculation why it is sluggish?

Regards,

Harri
